Children's teeth

Olive Tree Dental takes care of your child's oral health

As dentists, we believe in preventative treatment and we urge our patients to bring their children to the practice at a young age. Regular check-ups beginning at a young age can ensure that children do not suffer from untreated dental decay, which can have disastrous consequences for their developing dentition. Our staff can give numerous preventative therapies for children.

Treating a child at a young age also allows the dentist to detect early indicators of developing underbites, crossbites, or overbites. As with most things, the sooner you start treating it, the sooner it will be resolved.

Because prevention is always preferable to treatment, contact the practice immediately to schedule an appointment for your child!

Fluoride treatments are a safe and effective technique to prevent decay in your growing child’s teeth. Fluoride is painted onto the surface of the child’s teeth, which aids in tooth mineralisation. To prevent decay, fissure sealants are tooth-coloured and applied to the bite surfaces of children’s teeth.

According to studies, the younger your child is when they visit the dentist, even if it is simply for a check-up, the more likely they will have a favourable experience and grow up not being terrified of the dentist. Our staff will take extra care of your child to ensure that they feel safe and cared for.

Flouride treatment for children

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in water as well in foods and beverages such as fish and tea. It helps to prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel and decreasing plaque bacteria’s capacity to create acid. This acid is what causes tooth decay.

While fluoride occurs naturally and is added to some water systems in the UK, notably the East Midlands, it is also regularly added to toothpaste. Some patients, particularly those at high risk of decay, especially children, benefit from supplemental fluoride varnish treatment to help safeguard their teeth.

Fluoride varnish includes a high concentration of fluoride and is painted onto the surface of the teeth, strengthening the enamel and preventing decay. It can be used on both milk teeth and adult teeth. Because children in the United Kingdom continue to have some of the worst rates of tooth decay in the developed world, we recommend taking your child to the dentist for fluoride varnish treatment at the age of three. In rare situations, we may recommend starting treatment at a younger age if we believe it may enhance your child’s health.

We are passionate about preventative dentistry here at Olive Tree Dental. We want to stop issues before they start. Fluoride varnish application is a straightforward, minimally invasive technique that can be performed at your child’s routine dental check-up. It can assist to avoid more invasive treatments like fillings or tooth extraction.

Fluoride varnish is a yellow gel that tastes good. Using a soft brush, your dentist will paint it on the surface of your child’s teeth. When applied, it instantly sets and begins protecting the teeth. It is advised that children who have had fluoride varnish applied do not brush their teeth until the next morning when they should resume their normal twice-a-day brushing routine.

We may also recommend fluoride treatment for adults in some situations, particularly if you have a dry mouth (caused by a variety of medications and medical disorders), have restorations such as bridges or crowns, or wear braces. Adult patients are given a fluoride treatment in the practice by our hygienists, who use fluoride gel and trays.

Please call our reception team to schedule an appointment if you are interested in fluoride treatment for yourself or your children! We will be more than happy to assist.
